In traditional Google Search campaigns, advertisers rely on a fixed list of keywords and a limited set of headlines and descriptions. Ads are only triggered when a user searches for those exact keywords (or close variants). While this method worked well in the past and present, it’s becoming less effective in today’s fast-changing search landscape.

Why Traditional Search Is No Longer Enough

Search behavior has evolved. People don’t always type precise keywords anymore. They ask questions in natural language, upload images, or use vague, exploratory search phrases that often don’t align with the keywords you’ve targeted.

At the same time, limiting your ad setup to just 15 headlines and descriptions restricts how effectively Google can tailor your message for different search intents.

AI Max for Search – The Latest Addition to Google’s AI Power Pack

AI Max is Google’s next-generation approach to Search advertising. With just one click, it enhances your campaign by using advanced AI to go beyond keyword targeting, matching your ads to the intent behind a search, not just the words typed.

It analyses your landing pages, current ads, and keyword list to understand what your business offers. Then it dynamically finds the best opportunities to show your ads, even when the search term doesn’t match your keyword list exactly.

What Makes AI Max Different?

AI Max unlocks new capabilities that help you show up in the right moments:

  • Appear in searches without needing the exact keyword
  • Reach users asking natural-language or vague questions
  • Engage potential customers earlier in their journey

It works like a supercharged version of broad match, but smarter and more targeted. AI Max uses real data from your site and ads to match to qualified, high-intent searches that traditional setups may miss.

One standout feature is keywordless targeting, which lets Google match your ads to relevant searches based on your website content and user intent — completely bypassing the need for specific keywords.

You can opt in to:

  • Text Customization: Dynamic ad copy tailored to the search
  • Final URL Expansion: Google adjusts the landing page URL based on the user’s query, improving relevance and engagement

How to Enable AI Max

AI Max is gradually rolling out to Search campaigns. If available in your account, you’ll see an option to turn it on with one click. You can choose to:

  • Let Google use dynamic text and landing pages (recommended), or
  • Keep those settings off for tighter control

We recommend starting with the dynamic settings enabled to give Google’s AI the best chance to learn and perform.
